DICHOTOMY is an evocative new mixed media art project by Munich-based artist Uta Alexander, which explores the interplay between profane language and kitschy aesthetics. This project utilizes a diverse array of materials, including birch wood panels, mosaic tiles, acrylics, spray paint, resin, metals, jewelry, gemstones, rocks, wood, upcycled objects, glass, toys, mirrors, signs, and cheap imports, to craft vibrant and thought-provoking pieces. Each 30 x 30 cm birch wood panels serve as a canvas where Alexander melds classic mosaic techniques with contemporary art practices. The use of bold colors and varied textures creates a dynamic visual experience, while the inclusion of upcycled and found objects adds layers of meaning and history to the work. The panels are adorned with exclamations and curses, embedded within kitschy decorations reminiscent of hallmark moments and popular culture artifacts. The dichotomy at the heart of this project lies in the juxtaposition of coarse, colloquial expressions with the saccharine sweetness of kitsch. This contrast highlights the way these once taboo words have permeated everyday language and culture. By „decorating“ these expressions, Alexander draws attention to their normalized presence in modern communication, while simultaneously critiquing their commercialization. Viewers are invited into a space where the rawness of street language meets the manufactured cheerfulness of mass-produced decor. This collision creates an interactive experience, as if one were navigating through a comic strip filled with vibrant language and exaggerated expressions. The result is a bold commentary on the acceptance of informal language in mainstream culture and its ongoing evolution from subculture to pop culture. DICHOTOMY challenges viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of language and decor, encouraging them to see beauty and meaning in the unexpected fusion of the crude and the kitschy. Alexander’s work not only captures the spirit of the times but also pushes the boundaries of contemporary art, making a statement about the power and fluidity of cultural symbols.
